Mathematics Curriculum Intent

Students deserve a creative, comprehensive and ambitious mathematics curriculum that is rich in both skills and knowledge.  Our Mathematics curriculum will ignite curiosity and enthusiasm, fostering a deep love for learning while equipping students with the essential tools needed for everyday life and future employment.  The curriculum intent of the Mathematics Department stems of the overall aims and visions of the school.  The Mathematics curriculum gives students the opportunity to:

Ambition

Achieve fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics through diverse and frequent practice, tackling progressively complex problems over time.  This approach ensures a solid foundation, enabling students to master basic concepts before moving on to more challenging material, thereby enhancing their problem-solving skills and overall mathematical proficiency.

Responsibility

Cultivate a strong sense of responsibility for their learning journey, taking ownership of their progress by actively seeking assistance whenever necessary.  This is achieved by empowering students to plan, monitor and evaluate their learning effectively.  Set clear goals, track their progress and assess their understanding, allowing them to identify areas for improvement and seek help proactively.  By fostering these self-regulation skills, students become more independent, motivated and accountable for their educational growth.

Respect

Students will develop a profound respect for both the principles and real-world applications of mathematics.  They will learn to appreciate the importance of mathematical concepts and their relevance to everyday life, recognizing how these principles underpin various real-life situations and contextual content.  Through engaging lessons and practical examples, students will cultivate an understanding and respect for the discipline of mathematics, seeing its value not only in academic pursuits but also in its practical applications in their daily lives and future careers.

Resilience

Through a supportive and challenging curriculum, students will learn to overcome obstacles, building resilience that allows them to persevere in the face of difficulties.  Gain confidence by mastering new skills and knowledge, which empowers them to take initiative and make informed decisions independently.  By fostering these qualities, our program prepares students to be proactive, responsible and engaged citizens, ready to make meaningful contributions wherever they go.

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character — that is the goal of true education.
