Year 7 Catch Up Funding 2015-2016

Year 7 Literacy and Numeracy Catch Up Premium

The catch up premium provides an additional £500 of funding for students in Year 7 who have not achieved Level 4 in reading and maths at the end of Key Stage 2. The Department of Education have confirmed that:

  1. Where a students does not reach level 4 in both reading and maths the level of funding will be limited to £500;
  2. Students who attract support through the pupil premium or as a result of additional Special Educational Needs funding, will also attract the catch-up premium id they do not achieve level 4 in reading or maths at the end of Key Stage 2.

DfE guidance to schools explains that schools are free to decide how best to use the premium to improve the eligible students’ literacy and numeracy.

Interventions for students in receipt of the catch-up premium

  • Pet-Xi literacy and numeracy sessions.

Students attended a series of workshops over a week during school term to develop and enhance their literacy and numeracy skills.  The workshops were run by an outside organisation called PET-XI who provided a fun and exciting way to build on the students literacy or/and numeracy skills. 

  • Better Reading Support  Partners

Is designed to help students with their reading and comprehension.  Students are selected if they have a low reading age and attend the programme for 10 weeks.  During this time they spend 15 minutes three times a week during morning registration reading with a Learning support assistant.

  • Accelerated Reader

The programme provides detailed feedback for teachers and the librarian to help guide students to more suitable books according to their ability.  Furthermore the programme helps to develop a more positive approach to reading as students are motivated to achieve the best score on each quiz completed.

  • Small group tuition in Maths and English

Students are selected to attend additional Maths or English support lessons to help provide extra guidance and allow them to develop their numeracy/literacy skills.  The sessions are run with a small group of students to allow specific focus on different topics.

  • Mentoring with Academic Leader

Students had individual conservations with their Academic Leader to discuss their progress within Year 7.  Students identified areas of strength and improvement, which led to students contributing ideas of how they would like to be supported and the setting of SMART targets.                                   

  • Numeracy Ninjas

Is designed to fill gaps in students’ basic mental calculation strategies and also to empower them with the numeracy skills required to fully access GCSE Maths concepts.  During each morning registration students complete a 5 minute skills test, which is peer assessed and compared to previous scores.
