Curriculum Intent
Our intent in History is that through the study of historical events students will appreciate and gain a better understanding of the world around us through the complexity of human experiences, to evaluate evidence in multiple forms and to offer insightful interpretations with clarity of expression. This curriculum will develop and extend student’s knowledge and understanding of specified key events, periods and societies in local, British and wider world history; and of the wide diversity of human experience. We aim to enable students to master the knowledge and skills for success in the future outside school. The curriculum is broadly chronological so that students get a good sense of History through time. There are 4 key skills that every Historian needs and as a department we aim to develop: Knowledge, analysis, source, evaluation and interpretation as a foundation for studying history.
The curriculum strives to meet the values of SWRS:
- Be respectful – always treat people, property and the environment with kindness and consideration.
- Be ambitious – ask for help when you need it and strive to be the best you can be.
- Be reliable – do what is asked of you and deliver on your commitments.
- Be resilient – your daily challenges are helping you grow and prepare for the future.
We show respect for other cultures through our study of Native American Indians, Aboriginal Australians, Jewish and Black history and Empire studies. Within this our curriculum is inclusive and diverse as it meets the needs of our students who come from a wide variety of backgrounds.
