ICT at SWR is designed to equip young people with the ability to use technological tools to find, explore, analyse, exchange, and present information in a variety of contexts. The effective use of ICT also enhances the learning power of our students by developing their creative and thinking skills, collaboration and independent learning.
In years 7, 8 and 9 ICT is embedded into other subjects, covering topics from Office package, to modelling spreadsheets, multi-media and data handling, using a variety of theory and practical resources. E-safety is also covered for all KS3 during their form time.
In KS4 and 5 our intent is to provide a rich and challenging curriculum inspiring our students to develop their knowledge and understanding of ICT through studying the importance of ICT in the world today and how it will evolve in the future. Through practical involvement in a range of activities, students will apply their knowledge and develop skills to help them succeed in all other subjects. Our teaching and learning will help students develop a real applied focus, understand how technology can be used to tackle current issues, develop valuable transferable skills and progress to the next level of study.
Studying information technology provides our students with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to keep abreast of this rapidly changing field, in addition to gaining a core set of IT skills that are relevant in almost every industry.
ICT is delivered 1 hour per fortnight through Key Stage 3 and we cover a range of units during the three years, including eSafety, Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access), Graphic design, Web design and programming. We also offer OCR Level 1 and 2 (GCSE equivalent) at Key Stage 4 and BTEC Level 3 (A Level equivalent) at Key Stage 5 and the vocational nature of these courses gives students an excellent insight into how ICT impacts business and the world around them.
