Curriculum Overview

Intent and Implementation 

Personal, Social, Health and Education, PSHE, is a subject taught to Years 7-11 where students are given the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future.  It helps children and young people to stay healthy and safe, while preparing them to make the most of life and work. 

The PSHE curriculum has been designed to explore relevant, real-life issues to help students develop make informed choices and prepare them for their adult life.  It follows an approach to develop interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, in a structured and age-appropriate way.  

The PSHE curriculum incorporates the statutory elements of Relationship and Sex Education, and Health Education. Students cover all aspects of the curriculum at an age appropriate level to ensure they are given information, knowledge , skills and the ability to apply this learning to the choices and challenges they face in their daily lives. 

As a school we use the PSHE Association's Programme of Study as a foundation for the curriculum , using the Thematic Planning Model in three core themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and living in the Wider World. 

Our intent is to provide opportunities for students to: 

  • Deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and ensures that each of our students understand more about how to play a positive role within our society, both now and in the future.   

  • Provide students with a knowledge of their world, locally, nationally and globally and give them confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up within this.  

  • Provide students with opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. 

  • Develop student’s social interaction skills and emotional intelligence, through structured and open communication.
