Head of Department (SENDCO) & Acting Assistant Head
The Special Needs Department caters for a variety of special needs. We also have two additionally resourced provisions (ARP’s): one for Hearing Impairment and one for Physical Disabilities.
The Special Needs Department works with other subject areas to offer a range of courses at different levels for students. This includes Functional Skills, and BTEC Level 1 and 2 courses. However, these are subject to needs of the student and availability of teaching staff and resources.
- The Department currently runs an Entry Level course in Personal and Social Development for students in year 10 and 11. This is aimed to help them become confident individuals who are physically, emotionally and socially healthy and responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society and embrace change.
We also aim to provide a range of interventions for students to help them overcome potential barriers to learning. This includes literacy, reading and spelling interventions. We also run CogMed- a programme designed to improve working memory- an essential foundation to successful learning.
Please feel free to contact us to talk through your child's needs and we will be happy to let you know what provision can be offered for your child at Sir William Ramsay School.
After school clubs or Activities:
The SEND Department provides homework club for Key Stages 3 & 4 on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afterschool from 3-4pm. This is supervised and co-ordinated by a team of experienced LSA’s.

Hearing Impaired (HI) Unit
Welcome to the Hearing Impaired Additionally Resourced Provision (HI-ARP)
The Hearing Impaired Provision at Sir William Ramsay School has opened in July 2003 and works well at the heart of the school, aiming for inclusion of all Hearing Impaired students using total communication approach. Our Specialist HI, Speech and Language Therapists are Catrin Sills and Mo Marron. Mrs M. Fallon provides D/deaf educational support weekly on Wednesdays. BSL club takes place on Wednesdays at lunch time and it is open to all SWR students.
Physical Disability (PD) -ARP
In-charge of Physically Disabilities - ARP
Welcome to the Physical Disability Additionally Resourced Provision (PD-ARP)
The PD-ARP at Sir William Ramsay School is located at the heart of the school and benefits from the interventions of on-site matron, Physio Therapy, Occupational Therapy as well as guidance from the Learning Trust specialist Teachers. Where possible, Sir William Ramsay aims to organise access to all lessons for PD students on the ground floor.
The ARP caters for students with a diverse range of physical and sensory needs. For these specific students, we offer an accessible, supportive and adaptive environment. Our student’s needs are constantly monitored and so we can make sure that they have the fullest possible access to the National Curriculum.
Students are taught alongside their peer group and the ARP lead will work alongside teaching staff and link therapists to look at adaptations and differentiation where required. Alternative support arrangements are only offered if we feel a need cannot be met in class for example: at a detriment to student safety, or when a student may require extra time due to medical or physical needs.
